On May 16, 2025, the Department of Information and Media Design of the School of Art and Design organized a teacher symposium and a graduate student symposium on graduate education. This symposium was held in conjunction with the organizational activities of the Party branches of teachers from the Department of Information and Media Design and the Department of Photography. Graduate supervisors from the Department of Information and Media Design, graduate student representatives from all grades, and Party members of the teachers' Party branches of the Department of Information and Media Design and the Department of Photography gathered together to conduct in-depth exchanges around themes such as teaching experience, curriculum-based ideological and political education, teacher ethics and conduct, and document learning. It promoted positive interactions between teachers, as well as between teachers and students, and jointly explored effective paths to improve the quality of graduate education and the construction of curriculum-based ideological and political education.
In the session of teaching experience sharing, teachers exchanged design cases of industry-education integration and discussed the integration of curriculum-based ideological and political education. Taking "Teachers and students of our university shining at the Shanghai International Light and Shadow Festival, fulfilling the educational mission with the light of art" as an example, Teacher Zhu Wei introduced the splendid performance of teachers and students of our university at the first Shanghai International Light and Shadow Festival. Teacher Zhu Wei led graduate students to participate in the building facade projection project (3D-mapping) of the Light and Shadow Festival. Their work *Dreamland* was successfully selected and exhibited on-site at the main building of the Shanghai Exhibition Center, winning wide love and high praise from citizens. This case not only demonstrates the cutting-edge achievements of the integration of art and technology but also reflects the vivid practice of the school-running philosophy of "simultaneous emphasis on art and engineering, integration of industry and education" of the Department of Information and Media Design. Teacher Shen Jie shared the guidance process of the research on AR interactive design for the visualization of genealogy systems from the perspective of urban memory. During the research, the technical team, supervising teachers, and students conducted joint investigations, determined the "scenario-based narrative" design direction for AR genealogy, combined urban cultural memory, realized dynamic visualization of genealogy data using AR technology, and explored the digital inheritance path of traditional culture. Teacher Shen introduced the key guidance points in the five stages from the establishment of research topics and directions to thesis writing and achievement transformation, providing valuable research ideas and method guidance for graduate students.
In the discussion session on the construction of teacher ethics and conduct, Teacher Teng Fang emphasized that teacher ethics and conduct are the foundation for teachers to establish themselves. Education is the awakening of souls and the dialogue between lives, and teachers shoulder the heavy responsibility of cultivating the future of the motherland. Good teacher ethics and conduct are reflected in daily details: inspiring students' wisdom with profound knowledge in class, and caring for students' hearts with warmth in life. Teachers should stick to the moral bottom line, maintain educational fairness, take love as the background color, be educators with temperature, respect the personality differences of each student, and guide them to grow with patience and love. Teacher Chen Hongyan also said that "excellent scholarship makes a teacher, and upright conduct makes a model". Teachers' words and deeds have a typical exemplary effect on students, especially in the guidance and demonstration of morality and character. Therefore, teachers should pay special attention to their own self-cultivation, words, and deeds, and guide students to establish socialist core values and develop noble qualities such as fairness, integrity, responsibility, and dedication through words and deeds. Teachers' self-cultivation should be regarded as a daily compulsory course, kept in mind and reminded every day, without the slightest slack.
In addition, teachers and students also studied the college's graduate management documents. Organized by the college's graduate student union, students spoke one after another, sharing their understanding and experience of the thesis proposal report, thesis proposal defense, academic ethics, and the detailed rules for graduate thesis defense and degree application. Everyone agreed that the thesis proposal report should clarify research questions, expound research value, sort out existing achievements, plan research steps, use concise and clear language, highlight key points, and ensure that the report is logical and feasible. The thesis proposal defense is not only a display but also an opportunity to identify and make up for deficiencies and improve academic ability. Academic ethics is the foundation of academic research. Shanghai University of Engineering Science strictly prohibits plagiarism, ghostwriting, and other behaviors. Teachers and students must abide by the norms and engage in academic research with an honest attitude to maintain the purity and dignity of academia. They emphasize standardization and academic quality, providing institutional guarantees for the academic growth of graduate students.
This symposium provided an excellent communication platform for teachers and students, enhancing mutual understanding and trust between them, clarifying the goals and directions of graduate education, and laying a solid foundation for improving the quality of graduate education and the construction of curriculum-based ideological and political education. In the future, all master's supervisors and students of the Department of Information and Media Design, School of Art and Design will continue to uphold the fundamental task of "fostering virtue through education", practice the concept of integrating industry and education in running schools, and cultivate more outstanding talents with both virtue and art for the development of cultural and artistic undertakings in Shanghai and even the whole country.
